There's a huge piece of land i see right infront of me. Its not barren but filled with huge dispersed building spread accross two sides of the Dehradun's lonely main road leading to Badrinath. Its all green. Back in college Professers had an excellent way of simplifying things to the extent where you start thinking ohhh man isnt it so simple.
To start an organisation you need to have a plan, organise, staff, lead and finally control. Sexy man is it that simple i used to think way back! The organisation am standing in makes it difficult on my part to co-relate those 5 beautiful theoretical principles. People differ in perceptions, and notions. That's what makes each one so unique.
The huge assembly lines with people all spread clubbed at unique assembly points, each one being an expert in whatever he/she does. It starts with a plan .. moves on to circuit boards .. capacitors .. transformer .. freshly painted light blue genset cases rolling down the assembly line finally comming out to be packaged and all ready to be shipped. The result what we see in huge showrooms perhaps is a collective effort of each hand in here spread accross the line .. each motivated towards a broader vision not just self.
Its harmonic. The brand is made not by huge buildings or swanky floors with sexy attaire and ac's .. rather made by every unit being struggling hard each day towards a vision.
Its not easy to build strategies, plan and start things off .. as the huge management books suggest. Probably theory only enhances things off once the base is built. Its not that smooth road the literature often describes. Hundreds of firms take birth each day and are wiped off may be in few months later. Its not about making hefty bucks; rather sleeping on the hard floor .. being hungry .. burning your a** off .. yet dreaming and working to reach where you would want.
Its not about being an X crore firm, with a turover of X rather something else .. more than the culture .. its probably about people what makes it all. Narayan was lucky to have Sudha, and its nice to read what Sudha writes. You would want to be one of his kind may be seeking another Sudha. Jack had a life incomparable to others. The magnificient brains behind MSFT. Steve dropped out to create the pods you carry along. What makes them so unique? What does it take to build a firm worth living for?
I dont know. I wonder.
Its been a long time with this firm. Have seen it grow, have seen the hard times. Have kept grumbling to leave it .. its been very hard at times. You got to be me to feel it. Words are square as someone said it cannot be moulded enough to express! But then at this point I see most of them have left but me. They all planned to stay back .. not me .. but what has happened has awed me. Its been the other way round. This day am a bit stressed for i am on a double edged sowrd hung between the relationship of a friend and that of a caretaker of a firm for safeguarding its best interests. Hes been with me since long .. sharing coffee cups .. slangs .. moments of intimacy .. i yet i get an order. I got to ask him to surender everything and leave the organisation. Its kind of hard. I dont understand whats right or wrong ..
Theory speaks of motivation, binding, forgiveness, people .. human resources .. to what extent can it be applied in real .. I am forced to rethink at my state. What i have become? Have i hardened? The smooth MBA life i see in SIMSR amazes me at times for i sit amongst them sipping coffee yet not being a part of them but among those whom they got to listen.
I wonder what goes into building these energtic youngsters who might be leading organisations someday down the line.
But from where i stand and how i see it, i realize its easy to plan .. to get it on paper but framing it up and stabilizing it is a different game .. it has its own charm but you got to pay the price for everything. Probably Mr Narayan was right .. you got to put in 100% .. no less can make it. Not everything lies in books. May be it has to be experienced....
Some of you might be thinking if I had Mr Narayan or if I had Sudha ... thats the way it has been with them ... But may be you dont have Sudha beside you in real .. she might be far away .. she doesnt have to be near .. her thoughts will constantly push you long ... Shes always there.
